Dragonball ---}

A big "fuck you" to the producers, writers and directors the upcoming adaptation of the "Dragon Ball" manga/anime franchise.

Not even James Marsters waxing Shakespearean about Piccolo's character development can mask the hideous stench of B-grade crap. "Dragon Ball" is a modern pop-culture classic (let's all forget "Dragon Ball Z" and "Dragon Ball GT" for a moment), and the new script has bastardised the most basic plot details by all accounts.

Take this gem, for example: Goku is an American high school student. o_O!

I can't decide what's worse - the dumbing down of the story, or the inherent racism of casting a white actor for a distinctly Asian character. This is the same bullshit that plagued "21", the white-washed film adaptation of the true story of how a bunch of Asian MIT students swindled themselves millions of casino dollars.

This is 2008, and yet the old rules seem to remain: In Western films, Asian actors and actresses are marginal sidekicks or stereotypes at best.

Watchmen ---}
With all the excitement in eastern Europe this week, one can't help but think of Alan Moore's allegorical cult classic, set in the apocalyptic shadow of an alternate-universe Cold War.

How appropriate.

"But who watches the watchmen?"

This banner ad is amazing in so many ways:

Marketing gold!

In other news:

Ansi went home after no less than five drawn-out farewells. I hope he learns to exit with dignity one day. ♥

Semester ended, and I webcam-slut-fail at economics. I may have to reconsider my third major. I may also never graduate. I love options! Double stats next semester. :o(

Noniebear has been away for five weeks, working in Ohio, visiting the family in Tel Aviv, hiking through the Italian Alps, and is currently en route home via Singapore. Five weeks! I need cock. I miss the him. :o)

Been seeing more of the old GJ's crew, heading out for drinks/dinner at choice late-night spots known only to hospitality workers. They make me feel good about my sleeping patterns.

The hotel, meanwhile, has been up, down and a constant presence. Linda wrapped up her stint as a receptionist and hopped on a plane to the States, and Ru moved back to Darwin; I now have to deal with shoddy replacements *cough*Dan*cough*. Hee.

Jazz is having bday drinks at Opera Bar tonight. What to wear, what to wear... Someone come over and help me dress myself.

Until next time, children. Over and out.

Addendum: I'm so ahead of the curve, I skipped the Twitter train entirely and went straight to Facebook Posted Items syndication. Oh yes.

Sustainability ---}
Poor airlines. Not only are they up against a travel agents' class action for withholding commission on additional "taxes" and levies, they now have to cut jobs to cope with rising fuel costs.

And poor, poor working families of Australia. On top of suffering the indignity of being roped into the Rudd government's campaign machine, they now struggle with raising a child on $150,000 p.a. and paying for their non-hybrid gas-guzzlers.

I'll admit that corporate profitability invites a competitive and innovative marketplace, and that rising fuel costs coupled with inefficient public transport and infrastructure bottlenecks are making life difficult for many, but come on - can the whingers in the audience pull their heads out of their backsides and look at the positives?

Desperate times call for innovation, and the sooner we innovate from our unsustainable current standards, the better.

Instead of fuel tax cuts (which will promote environmental degradation and drive price rises through increased demand), how about research into smart biofuels (i.e. based on inedible sources)? Instead of wasting money on flash ticketing systems, how about fixing inefficient transport networks first? And don't get me started on the bureaucratic red tape roadblocking innovation in city-building...how does a city evolve if new plans are knocked back as being too different or ambitious?

A few players like Air NZ and the new Rudd government have picked up the ball in terms of research and funding, but more corporations, governments and individuals need to take the same view and address the issue of sustainable living without clinging to tired old customs. There is a global economic downturn, and resources depletion and climate change are no longer pure speculation - we cannot expect to maintain former living standards in an economically- and environmentally-responsible manner. Now is the time to talk about sustainability and innovation more than ever.

We don't need to be spoon-fed tax cuts, subsidies and sugar-coated promises that will inevitably make us worse off down the track.

We deserve - and can do - so much better.
